Counseling & Support

There’s no “normal” reaction to abuse. In fact, the effects of abuse can vary greatly from person to person. The important thing for teens to know is that professional support lessens the long term negative effects of abuse by helping victims develop coping skills. Sweeping abuse under the carpet doesn’t work.

Counseling and support groups are available throughout New Hampshire for teens who’ve been abused.  One-on-one counseling gives victims a safe, private place to share their feelings, while support groups bring teens with similar experiences together. If you’re a teen in need of help, talk with a trusted adult about finding the right support system for you. If you’re unsure of what to do, contact us.

Untreated trauma can get worse over time. Teens who don’t get help after abuse are at higher risk for depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, and low self-esteem. So, while it might be hard to make the decision to seek help, it’s undoubtedly a positive step toward healing.

Professional support helps victims understand that their abuse doesn’t have to define them.  If you’re a victim, it’s time to get to know yourself again. Seek help and make healing your highest priority.

Here are some things you can ask yourself as you travel the road to recovery:

  • What things do I like to do?
  • Who is a good person for me to talk to?
  • What things do I value or believe in?
  • What is my personality like? How would someone describe me?
  • What am I good at?
  • What activities can I involve myself with?
  • How can I get involved in my community?
  • Do I want to talk to a counselor?
  • Would I like to join a support group?
  • Do I want to read some books on self-esteem or sexual abuse?
