Medical Exam
All children who are suspected victims of child abuse are entitled to a medical exam conducted by a specialized medical provider and a referral for this exam is offered as part of their visit to the CAC.
In communities where non-acute exams are not available on-site at the CAC, referrals are made to local medical partners. However, on-site exams help to eliminate barriers for children and their caregivers, increasing access for those who struggle with transportation or other resources.
Specialized, non-acute wellness exams are designed to give children peace of mind about their health and development. These specialized exams, are delivered in a compassionate, coordinated, and comprehensive manner that is responsive to each child’s physical, developmental and emotional needs. By creating a safe and supportive space for these exams, we’re ensuring that every child feels confident, cared for, and empowered in their well-being.
These non-acute exams are currently offered at the Child Advocacy Center of Belknap County in Laconia, and we are working to increase their availability statewide—because with immediate access to comprehensive on-site services, all child victims of abuse who walk through our doors can begin the complex journey of healing with the support of a team of caring professionals.
In CAC communities where the CAC does not offer on-site medical or Pedi-SANE exams, referrals are made to local medical partners for this important medical exam.
It is important to know more the medical visit and exam. The video below will help demystify the medical visit.
The pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner (Pedi-SANE) provides medical care to:
- Ensure the health and well-being of the child
- Reassure the child that everything is okay with their body
- Diagnose and treat medical conditions that may or may not be related to child abuse
- Provide video documentation of possible physical and forensic findings
- Allow for collection of evidence that may be present on the child’s body or clothing using the Pediatric Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit
- Address any underlying medical, developmental or psychological concerns.
The medical examination also provides an opportunity for the child and family to be linked to other important services and resources. For children who lack access to consistent medical care and may have previously-undiagnosed medical conditions, the Pedi-SANE provides care and makes referrals for follow-up, as needed.
